We the Players

Eversion.

First off, I apologize for the huge hiatus we’ve been on, but Roo’s been tied up with his Fight Tips project.  Speaking of which, if you haven’t visited there, now would be a good time to get acquainted with the crew!  If you’ve been a regular there, however, just know that things will be changing… and for the better.

I’m not sure how many of our readers have heard of this game, but I think it’s time I sat down with this one and said something.  After seeing a rogue reviewer play the first level, call it “a cute but obvious Mario clone”, and leave it at that, I was kinda insulted.  This game gets deeper than that, and anyone at The independent Gaming Source “Commonplace Book Competition” probably knew that already.

The first twist on your everyday good ol’ stompin’ platformer is eversions.  You’ll have to change the “eversion” of the level in order to catch all the gems in the level, and sometimes just to proceed!  I really don’t want to spoil too much, but at first it seems like it’s only like changing seasons, like those levels in Kirby games.  Mario 3 did this at one or a few levels, where there were two versions of the same level that you’d have to go back and forth between.  Back to the Future parts 2&3 were based on it (dear God, shoot me for even remembering that one!).  But this is the first one to take it to extreme levels…

Level 4-1

See that picture of 4-1?  Looks happy and peaceful just as you’d expect.  But once you get this far and hit that block, you’ll see exactly what I mean.

And it only gets more interesting from there.  As a hint, I’ll go ahead and spoil what that gem counter is doing in level 7- you can evert there once you have 240 gems.  A lot of people seem to miss that one the first time around, and I might have tried it myself simply because I was looking for more eversion points in that level anyway.

Lots of levels, two endings, living up to the warning at the start screen… this earns a solid place right here.  What are you waiting for?  Go play it!
